WCT Women’s market: Passion Projects

The Women’s market hosted at Shopify by the Women in Communications and Technology organization on Wednesday, July 17 had a great turn out for female entrepreneurs. This market was created to give a leg up on female entrepreneurs that are starting their businesses. This market allowed these women to receive exposure, build a network with other female entrepreneurs, and connect with influential women in the local Ottawa area. This market was a chance to support other females and give these small businesses the exposure they deserve to grow and make an impact.

There were many lovely people that I had the pleasure of speaking with at this networking event. Empow(her) is an organization that provides network opportunities in Ottawa for growth while also encouraging them to take on leadership roles. They hold conferences and workshops that women can use to learn about professional development.

I also had the pleasure to speak with Melissa who had owned The Creative Sunflower business. She sells handcrafted items such as wooden coasters, and flowers for weddings and events, as well as hosts DIY workshops for items such as flower crowns. All these lovely women have started these businesses from a place of passion which drives them to create a community.

There were various other organizations such as Find your Tribe, started by Naomi and Sam. These young women created this organization and hosted a couple of events in Ottawa to bring people of colour together. Their goal is to strengthen the community by bringing these like-minded people together to talk about their experiences and struggles.

The people you surround yourself really dictate how you grow and who you turn out to be. In this community, you will be able to surround yourself with the right people that will help you grow to be a strong leader. These women are truly living their dream by putting in the time to make a small difference in the lives of others. Personally, I took part as a vendor for my business and passion project Awkward Royalty. I got to connect with so many lovely women who are so humble and willing to collaborate. It was a great space to encourage female entrepreneurs to compete in a male-dominated industry.

Thanks Madina for this informative blog post! Got a chance to learn about more local groups in Ottawa. Your project “Awkward Royalty” sounds really neat and impressive that you started at a young age! Good luck with it!
