22 Oct The Lack of Stuttering Representation
The 22 of October is International Stuttering Awareness Day. One of our newest writers; Paris Barnes, goes ito depth about what it is like living with a stutter.
Stuttering is a type of communication disorder when there are prolongations, repetition of words as well as different facial and body movements that occur when trying to speak. Causes for stuttering are based on various factors like genetics, early child developmental delay, brain injuries or other neurological factors. Stuttering is not caused by nervousness or anxiety but can increase because of it. People who stutter makeup 1% of the population and about 300,000 of them live in Canada, myself being one of them. Even though there are many people worldwide who stutter, there aren’t enough resources to support our needs and accommodations. To learn more about stuttering inclusion continue to the next page.
