Owning your “feminine” strengths

Negative Perception #2: “She’s a pushover or is too soft to be assertive”

Trait 2: Flexibility and Adaptability

Most women have been taught since birth to be flexible to other’s needs and to be adaptable to the situation around us. Most of the times it’s simply the expected form of behavior from women. In spite of how annoying this expectation of women is, for those of us who have this trait, it can be the personality trait that helps us the most in our workplace.

People who are adaptable usually demonstrate an open mind, listen to alternative ideas and approaches to tasks, come up with creative or innovative ways to solve problems and can adjust behaviors and actions to meet current day or task demands. The only thing that I would suggest; do not let anyone, including yourself, take your ability to adapt and be flexible for granted. You don’t always need to say yes or be flexible. You also do not have to quietly do your work in the background while others take charge. Remember if you have adaptability as a trait, it’s an asset to your team and organization but is not something that you just HAVE to do as a woman. If you are flexible and adaptable make sure others see it as an asset and not as a weakness to be taken advantage of. (To learn how to say no assertively, yet politely click here) Do not be hesitant to take credit where it’s due.
